ECCTA [UK] - Directors Identity Verification

Economic, Crime and Transparency Act

Updated over 3 months ago

Companies House is introducing a new identity verification process to prevent the misuse of companies for illegal activities. Starting from 8 April 2025, individuals can voluntarily verify their identity through GOV.UK One Login or an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP). Identity verification will become mandatory for the following:

  • New directors and people with significant control (PSCs)

  • Existing directors and PSCs

  • Anyone acting on behalf of a company

This requirement will also apply to members of limited liability partnerships (LLPs). Non-compliance will result in penalties and restrictions on company filings.

Once verified, individuals will be given an identity number from Companies House.

To add the Identity Number to GEMS do the following:

  1. Navigate to the Persons Snapshot. Click View More Details.

2. Click National Insurance Details from the menu.

4. Click New National Insurance.

5. To view the list of Types open the Lookup List.

6. Select Companies House ID from the list.

7. Enter the personal verification code given to the persons by Companies House in the Number field. Complete any other relevant fields. Click Save.
