A guide to viewing and navigating charts

Updated over 6 months ago

Once a chart created with the GEMS Charting (Preview) tool has been launched via the Charting Hub, the chart opens in a new browser window. Within the window are:

  • an Overview panel in the top left corner acting as a visual summary of the chart's structure and the user's viewing area

  • the chart itself in the center of the window

  • a toolbar on the left-hand side of the window

The Overview Panel

The Overview panel in the top left of a launched chart shows the visual structure of the chart.

The blue-shaded area of the Overview panel shows the current viewing area of the chart. If the user zooms into the chart (see below), the blue-shaded area shrinks; if the user zooms out, the area expands.

To minimize the Overview panel, click anywhere on the purple bar with the word "Overview." To expand it again, click the same area.

Navigate the Chart

The chart itself appears in the center of the opened chart window.

On the chart, Entities are represented by boxes. The name of the Entity appears at the top of the box, followed by the fields GEMS used to generate the chart.

Ownership percentage is displayed on the chart's relational lines between Entities.

The chart's relational lines can be highlighted in their entirety by hovering the cursor over the line itself, the ownership percentage number, or any Entity box.

Clicking an Entity box opens the Data panel on the left-hand side of the screen.

Please note: The options within the Data panel differ depending on whether Edit Mode, available to Charting Tool Edit Users, is enabled. See Modify the Fields within a Box in a Chart for more information.

To zoom in and out of the chart, users may use the scroll wheel on their mouse or their laptop's touchpad's magnification functionality, or they may click the Zoom icon on the Charting Toolbar on the lefthand side of the screen.

After clicking the Zoom icon, the Zoom toolbar appears at the top of the chart.

The Zoom toolbar consists of the following icons, listed from left to right:

  • Zoom In: Increases the size of the chart. Can be clicked multiple times to continue increasing the chart size.

  • Zoom to original size: Adjust the chart size to the size at which it was generated.

  • Zoom Out: Decreases the size of the chart. Can be clicked multiple times to continue decreasing the chart size.

  • Fit Content: Adjusts the size of the chart so that it fits the browser window.

  • Close: Closes the Zoom toolbar.

While zoomed in on a chart, the viewing area can be adjusted by using the scrollbars on the bottom and right-hand sides of the screen or by clicking and dragging the blue-shaded area in the Overview panel.

While zoomed in on a chart in Browse Mode, the viewing area can be adjusted by clicking and holding in any area outside the Entity boxes and lines and using the mouse or touchpad for movement.

Please note: Clicking and holding to adjust the viewing area is not available in Edit Mode. When in Edit Mode, use the scrollbars and the blue-shaded area in the Overview panel to adjust the viewing area.
