Explore the Chart Toolbar and Its Icons

Descriptions of the various icons and options available on the Charting Toolbar

On a launched chart, a toolbar appears on the left-hand side of the chart window.

The toolbar contains the following icons:

  • Edit Mode

  • Save

  • Export

  • Zoom

  • Search

  • Layout

  • Sub-Charts

  • Data

  • Formatting

  • Filters

Please note: The Edit Mode, Save, Formatting, and Filters icons are only available for Charting Tool Edit Users.


The Edit Mode Icon

Clicking the Edit Mode icon on the toolbar switches between Browse Mode and Edit Mode. If the square within the icon is empty, the user is in Browse Mode; if the square contains a pencil, the user is in Edit Mode.

Please note: Edit Mode is only accessible for Charting Tool Edit Users.

Edit Mode allows the user to move boxes on the chart and to edit the visual appearance of boxes. For information on moving boxes, see Move Boxes on a Chart.

The Save Icon

The Save icon allows Charting Tool Edit Users to save a chart or to save a chart's formatting as a Template so it can be accessed via the Manage Saved Charts/Launch a Saved Chart tile on the Charting Hub.

Please note: A Template is a collection of rules regarding the conditional formatting, filters, sub-charts, and individual boxes’ Box Styles that can be applied to a chart.

The Export Icon

The Export icon allows users to print the created chart, export the created chart as a PDF, export the created chart as a Visio file, or export the chart and any sub-charts as a booklet in Word format.

The Zoom Icon

The Zoom icon opens the Zoom toolbar, which allows users to zoom in or out of the chart.

The Search Icon

The Search icon allows users to search the boxes within a chart for a particular string of text.

The Layout Icon

The Layout icon allows users to modify the method used by the GEMS Charting (Preview) tool to draw the chart's lines. It also allows users to reset the position of any boxes that have been moved while the user was in Edit Mode.

The Sub-Charts Icon

The Sub-Charts icon allows users to view and, if they are Charting Tool Edit Users, create sub-charts based on Entities or data points. It also allows Charting Tool Edit Users to modify the legend created for the chart.

The Data Icon

The Data icon opens the Data panel. The Data panel displays details for a box that has been selected (i.e., that has been clicked on), and it allows Charting Tool Edit Users to modify which fields appear within the selected box and to create sub-chart based on that box.

The Formatting Icon

The Formatting icon allows Charting Tool Edit Users to edit the visual appearance of a box or line, create custom formatting rules for a chart, and to apply a saved Template to a chart.

The Filters Icon

The Filters icon allows Charting Tool Edit Users to filter a created chart so that only certain boxes appear.
