Save a Chart as a Template

A step-by-step guide to saving charts as Templates

Updated over 9 months ago

To save a created chart's formatting and sub-charts as a Template that can be applied to future charts, follow these steps:

Please note: A Template is a collection of rules regarding the conditional formatting, filters, sub-charts, and individual boxes’ Box Styles that can be applied to a chart.

First, apply any desired formatting changes and create any desired sub-charts for the created or launched chart. For more information on applying formatting changes to a chart, see Change the Appearance of Boxes and Lines in a Chart and Create Custom Formatting Rules for a Chart. For information on creating sub-charts, see View, Create, and Modify Sub-Charts.

Next, click the Save icon on the Charting Toolbar.

On the submenu that appears after clicking the Save icon, click Save if this chart is a newly created Template or a Template that is being updated. Click Save As if this Template is an existing Template that needs to be saved as a new Template.

On the Save Chart screen that appears, enter a name for the Template in the “Name” field, or leave the default name in the field.

The “Description” field can be used to provide an optional description of the chart or Template.

By default, Templates are public and accessible to all GEMS users. To make a Template private and visible only to the user who created it, click the checkbox in the “Private” field. Otherwise, leave the “Public” checkbox selected to allow all users to utilize the Template.

Click the checkbox next to the “Template” field.

To set the Template as the system-wide default for all charts created by all users in the future, click the checkbox next to “System Default Template.”

To cancel the saving process, click the Cancel button; otherwise, to save the Template, click Accept & Save.

For information on applying the saved Template to charts, see Apply a Template to a Chart.
