How to Record Legal Entity Identifiers

Updated over a year ago

Introduction

The Regulatory Oversight Committee (ROC) is a group of over 60 public authorities from more than 40 countries that coordinates and oversees a worldwide framework of legal entity identification, the Global LEI System. This system authorizes operational issuers known as Local Operating Units (LOUs) to issue Legal Entity Identifiers (LEI) used to uniquely identify legally distinct entities that engage in financial transactions. Legal Entity Identifiers (LEI) are 20-character alpha-numeric codes.

You can add the LEI for an entity in GEMS from the Other Registrations Screen and view it on the Business Entity/Company Basics Screen.

Please note: For information on how to add the LEI to the FR Y-6 Report (US-only), please see the Federal Reserve Reporting (FR Y-6) Tutorial on the Community Support Site.

Adding an LEI to a Business Entity/Company

To add an LEI to a company/ business entity, do the following:

  1. From the entity's Snapshot, click View More Details, then click Other Registrations.

  2. Click New Other Registration.

  3. On the New Other Registration screen, select "LEI" in the Registration Description field and the appropriate jurisdiction in the Jurisdiction field by clicking the Lookup List button to view a list of all registration descriptions and jurisdictions set up in GEMS.

  4. In the Registration # field, enter the LEI provided to you by the Local Operating Unit (LOU) and enter the date it is effective from. You can also enter the Effective To date if you are entering an LEI that has expired.

Please note: Only one current and confirmed LEI Registration within the same date range and jurisdiction can exist for an entity.

  5. In the Status field, select the appropriate status from the Lookup List.

  6. Select the LOU in the Regulatory Body field. To do this, click the Lookup List button. In the resulting popup window, select Basics in the first Search Field dropdown and Category in the second. Then enter "LOU" in the third Search For field and click Search. The resulting list of Non-Affiliates contains all the LOUs defined in the system. Click on the name of the appropriate LOU.

  7. Back on the New Other Registration screen, click the Save button.

  8. The LEI is saved and is displayed in a read-only field on the Business Entity/Company Basics screen.
